New Works was developed as a major program offering in 1996, seeking to promote significant opportunities for distinguished artists (all former participants in Haystack's program), to create new work and exchange ideas with peers in Haystack's celebrated studio setting. Free from the responsibility of teaching, New Works offers these artists time themselves to retreat and immerse fully in their work and ideas. This program is uniquely suited to the school's scale and open format, which foster ideal conditions for retreats of this scope. New Works is made available subject to foundation funding, and is often offered in alternate years between Haystack conferences and/or symposia.
The 2008 New Works included open studios, along with an optional workshop in writing, led by poet Alison Hawthorne Deming, who was a visiting artist during one of Haystack's 2007 summer sessions. New Works will be offered again in 2010.
